Professional Biography: David Wayne Deaton, MD
David Wayne Deaton, MD, is a Cardiac Surgeon, the Surgical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program, and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School - Baystate. Dr. Deaton earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University and subsequently completed his comprehensive general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Chicago.
Following his training, Dr. Deaton joined Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. He has remained an actively practicing cardiac surgeon at this institution for the past 36 years, dedicating his career to clinical excellence and surgical advancement in the region.
Dr. Deaton performs a vast array of complex adult open-heart surgeries and leads advanced therapeutic programs. His primary areas of clinical focus and surgical expertise include:
Aortic Surgery: Aortic valve replacement, aortic aneurysm repair, valve-sparing replacement, and homograft aortic valve replacement.
Structural Heart & Coronary Surgery: Mitral valve repair, mitral valve replacement, and coronary artery bypass grafting.
Mechanical Circulatory Support: Surgical implantation and management of VA and VV ECMO, Impella 5.5, and Heartmate 3 LVAD systems.
